When Bitches Care: The Usually Biting Snapping Dishing Bitching Boys in Pumps Show that Kindness is Genderless.

When folks think of Drag Queens, such icons as Ru Paul, Lady Bunny or Lipsinka come to mind. The cliché is he would-be Diva snapping her gum and fingers and “reading” a fashion victim by cleverly insulting them. Or they recall one of the many videos online where young, and usually down and out, “trannies” scream at gawkers or back-talk to cops. This is a stereotype, but the truth is much kinder and gentler: It’s the boys in heels that heal.
All over the world Drag events, parties and shows raise money for a whole range of services and charitable organizations. Best in Drag funds Aid for AIDS and The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence raise thousands and give funds to everything from GLASS (Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Social Services) to relief funds for the Peruvian Earthquake.
“And why not? If you’re gunna look fierce you might as well act fierce, and nothing is fiercer-er than kindness, it kills ‘em darling,” says Auntie Luscious: drag queen and co-founder of DailyDragQueenAffirmations.com, “Drag queens are the soul of the gay community, even though occasionally ostracized by the very people we help. Yes, help. Entertain. Heal.”

DailyDragQueenAffirmations.com is exactly what it sounds like. Every day a drag queen tells the viewer how fabulous he or she is. “The human body is an amazing thing. You physically respond and can heal from positive messages and humor” says Ruth Gurwitch MSW UCLA Emergency Medical Center, “Affirmations work because they put your body, mind and spirit into a positive mindset. The fact that they’re Drag Queens saying them just kind of makes the whole thing fabulous-er.”
Affirmations are nothing new to cognitive therapists. We tell ourselves negative things every day. Things like: ”I am so stupid to have done that” or “I screw up everything.” These negative messages get into our minds and depress us. The idea of affirmations is to put positive ideas into our craniums and our belief systems, ideally every day. Once it becomes a habit a positive affirmation can change one’s whole outlook for the better. “I am a worth while person.” “I am happy.” “I make smart decisions.” “I like me.” These are all examples of positive affirmations that help us have strong peaceful positive lives. These “ladies” put a drag spin on that with sayings like: “Oh girrrl you’re fierce!” or “you find peace in the everyday-ness of life, like pulling lint off a sweater.” Or the very funny and famous Jackie Beat as a fortune teller saying “You have one minute to LIVE!!!!
Oh wait, I mean in this minute live.. sorry.”

“Some are hysterical and some are just sound advice. We’re first and foremost providing affirmations,” says Alex Dorn, one of the co-founders of Start with a Laugh productions, “we want people to smile and feel better every day.” When asked about the yearly charge of $20 he says: “Well making 365 original videos wasn’t cheap and we didn’t want to shove ads and products down peoples throats. That’s sending mixed messages.” What’s next? Drag Queen nurses and physicians. “And again… why not?” says Auntie, sipping a martini until she re-thinks, “Well I suppose glitter has no place in the E.R.”

Friday, January 16, Komedia Bath.

Back off Priscilla, Australia’s very own international drag queens are coming back to Bath with the most awe-inspiring, sing-a-long drag show you will ever see… The Great Australian Drag Show.

Watch as Jessica James, Kris del Vaise, Linda Lamont and Amanda Monroe come to life in a gender-bending musical parody extravaganza.

The Great Australian Drag Show comprises four Priscilla style Australian drag queens with a taste for self-satire and a wicked turn of phrase. Lip-syncing their way through a cavalcade of cheesy dance classics, they’ll draw out your inner drag and have you screaming for more. For one night only The Great Australian Drag Show bring all the glam, gloss and glitter, dance routines and divas, fabulous songs and dazzling costumes to Komedia Bath.

The show is currently playing to sell out audiences off Broadway in New York City and from November 28 the troupe performed nightly in the world famous Spiegel Tent as part of the city of Edinburgh’s Christmas celebrations.

The drags took the Edinburgh Fringe by storm this season. Playing to packed houses, they featured twice on BBC’s The Culture Show, STV, EdFest and were loved by the festival press.

THE show starts at 8.30pm on January 16 (food served from 7pm). Tickets are available online at www.komedia.co.uk/bath or from the Box Office on 0845 293 8480.
